The Favorite Aunt is a parenting blog for non-parents. Aunts, specifically, although uncles are welcome. There are over a thousand results for “parenting” on Amazon.com, but only 48 for “aunt”. And those include “Aunt Jemima” and “Aunt Bee’s Mayberry Cookbook.” Not one of them is what I’ve been looking for: a guide for dealing with nieces and nephews. Aunt hacks, if you will. See my inaugural post.
I am the aunt of three wonderful kids: Violet (9) , Dash (7) and Jack-Jack (3). Those aren’t their real names–but they were dressed as The Incredibles one Halloween!
I am also the “unofficial” aunt to three other lovely girls, daughters of good friends of mine, on whom I’ve doted since babyhood. They are Emily (18), Anne (15) and Charlotte (11). Those aren’t their real names either, but they do love reading the Bronte sisters. Emily and Anne are sisters, Charlotte is an only child.
When I’m not babysitting or doing sleepovers, I’m the marketing director for a small Macintosh software developer. When I have time, I like to devote it to digital filmmaking and have been known to teach the occasional class in video editing and web design.

Will you be my aunt, too?
I always wanted a favorite aunt. Unfortunately, I had a Wicked Witch of the West aunt.
Actually, can I be your aunt?
I don’t have any brothers or sisters.
Looks like I’m going to miss the aunt experience all the way around.
Great blog.
Hi Jeanne, We, too, are non-parents. We have alot of nieces (5) and nephews (4) and even a great niece (1) and some great nephews (4). Our problem is that they all live out of state. ( Of course, this means that our brothers (5) and sister (1) live out of state also, so we can’t have the brother-sister thing going either. ) We’d love to be an Aunt and Uncle to them but alas, it is not to be. We make efforts to visit when we can, especially for Weddings and such. You are so fortunate to have a relationship with yours. We envy you. We find that adopting the neighborhood children helps to fill the void. Loved your blog.
@Sue & Jack: I know I am lucky! I also know that all these kids will grow up, and I’ll be looking to my own neighborhood children to get my niece/nephew fix in the not-very-distant future.
